League Game 1 – BUCS Northern 4B League 2015-2016
University of York Women’s Football 2nds 4 – University of Leeds Women’s 3rds 0
Goalscores – Cait, Rosie, Marie, Lia
On Wednesday York University Women’s Second Team started their league campaign at home to Leeds University 3rds.
York suffered a major injury before the game even started with Molly being involved in a bike accident the night before. She will be out for some time and the whole club wish her a speedy recovery. Her place in the starting line-up was taken by Barbara.
York started brightly and should have been ahead with chances for both Cait and Rosie going begging. But after 10 minutes, great work by Barbara and Holly, with Holly’s shot on the turn being saved well by the keeper and rebound being scored by Cait, a real poacher’s goal.
Two minutes later York were 2 up with a well taken goal from Rosie. The Leeds goalkeeper saved on the edge of her box but the rebound fell to Rosie who calmly placed the ball into the Leeds goal. It was exactly what York deserved after a dominating start to the half.
After 15 minutes Barbara pulled up injured and was replaced by Lia. Amy was causing huge problems for the Leeds right back and nearly scored after 17 minutes when her shot was saved at the near post.
York extended their lead on 33 minutes when Marie’s persistent in the box saw her poke the ball passed the Leeds goalkeeper following a York corner. It was then two in a minute with a candidate for goal of the season from Lia. First she was caught offside, but from the goalkeeper’s clearance, a one touch forward pass from Rosie and from outside the box on the angle Lia nonchalantly lobbed the ball over the retreating goalkeeper into the net. True class!
Leeds had to wait until the 41st minute before testing Kathryn in the York goal. But half-time came with York 4-0 ahead, and totally dominating the game.
The second half started the same as the first with York dominating the ball and they should have got a 5th when Rosie had her shot saved by the Leeds goalkeeper.
As the players got tired the game became a midfield battle with Leeds getting the upper hand, but they still struggled to really trouble the York goal. The York defence of Ella, Lauren, Gina and Ella was playing fantastic and kept Leeds to long range shots, which Kathryn dealt with easily.
York made two substitutes – Anna coming on for Gina, and Carlotta, a late call up for Molly, for a tiring Cait.
On 86 minute Leeds were awarded a controversial penalty. A scramble in the York penalty area stuck an arm, and the referee pointed to the spot. The York and Leeds players looked bemused as to who it had hit. The Leeds player stepped up and stuck a poor attempt well wide of the goal.
A minute later York stormed down the other end and a quick volley from Marie was turned onto the post by the Leeds goalkeeper.
The final whistle blew with York winning 4-0. The second half was disappointing after dominating the first but much of this was due to tiredness and it being the first game of the season. Coach Chris Collins was very happy, with the defence looking very strong, and plenty of chances for the forwards. He knows harder matches are to come but it was a great start to the season. Captain Lauren left the field with a huge smile on her face.
Coach’s Player of the Match: Holly for an outstanding centre forward play, just a goal would have made it perfect.
