Cup Final – City of York Girls U13s Cup (7-a-side) 2015-2016
York Railway Institute U13s 5 – Kirk Deighton Rangers U13s 0
Goalscorers – Alexia x2, Chloe J x2, Amber
Cup finals are always tense affairs and the girls were all showing nerves. Coach Chris rested Chloe J from the start after a recent injury, so picked the following line up. Katie in goal, Chloe H and Lauren in defence, Amber and Denva in midfield and after her goal last week, Kimberly started up front with Alexia.
The match started with York RI in total control of the ball but Kirk Deighton packing their defence. Early on, York RI forced a succession of corners but couldn’t create a clear-cut chance. Amber had a half chance she hit over, and Alexia was looking sharp.
On 7 minutes the pressure finally told when a fantastic cross field ball from Amber found Alexia on the York RI right. She went inside, then outside the defender before firing the ball low into the back of the net.
On 10 minutes Chloe J replaced Kimberly upfront and immediately her pace troubled the Kirk Deighton defence.
York RI were now camped in the Kirk Deighton half and forced a series of corners from which Kimberly, Alexia and Amber failed to score. The York RI defence of Lauren and Chloe H were dominating the Kirk Deighton forwards, Katie was yet to make a meaningful save.
Chloe H won the ball on 13 minutes deep in her own half before finding Amber, who in turn found Denva. Her driving run found Alexia who crossed for Chloe J to shoot first time and for the goalkeeper to save well, the best move of the game so far. Denva’s long throws were causing problems and on 14 minutes she collected a rebound from one and drove at the heart of the defence. She fed Chloe J who shot first time, only to see the goalkeeper save well low down.
With 5 minutes of the half to go Lucy-Liu, Tegan and Grace replaced Chloe H, Alexia and Amber. On 21 minutes Katie made her first save of the game when she easily collected a long-range shot.
Half Time: York Railway Institute U13s 1 – Kirk Deighton Rangers U13s 0
Kimberly came on for the impressive Chloe J at half time. The second half started as the first had ended with York RI dominating the ball. Grace was looking sharp in defence, covering any threat the opposition could muster.
Katie made a smart save when she collected the ball at the feet of the Kirk Deighton forward and from her long kick Lucy-Liu found Tegan, but her shot was straight at the goalkeeper. With 15 minutes to go and with the Kirk Deighton defence tiring York RI brought on Chloe J, Alexia and Amber for Lucy-Liu, Tegan and Kimberly.
Immediately a long throw from Denva was met first time on the volley by Alexia, but the shot drifted just wide. On 38 minutes York RI finally got their second goal. Denva won the ball just outside her own area and fed Amber, who in turn fed Alexia down the York RI left. Initially it looked as if the chance had gone but good work from Alexia and Amber found Lauren near halfway, who quickly found Denva. A pass round the corner to Chloe J, who took one touch and fired an unstoppable shot across the goalkeeper into the far corner of the goal, fantastic team goal.
A throw in from Lauren found Denva, whose quick pass found Alexia wide left. She cut inside the defender at pace and a quick one two with Denva saw her in on goal, but a good low save from the goalkeeper saved Kirk Deighton. Another long throw from Denva was flicked audaciously just wide by Chloe J, great try!
With 10 minutes to go Chloe H replaced Grace in defence. On 43 minutes York RI got their third. Good work from Chloe J and Amber put Denva through. Her pass was cut out by the Kirk Deighton defence and it fell to Chloe J, who from a similar position to her first goal, hammered the ball into the same corner of the goal, another fantastic strike!
York RI were in total domination now and a good run from Alexia saw the goalkeeper make a fine save. A minute later the goalkeeper saved after a great run from Denva. A great early kick from Katie found Alexia on the left. She beat the defender twice, rounded the goalkeeper and looked like she must score before a defender somehow cleared the ball on the line.
With 2 minutes to go a corner from Amber was met on the first time volley by Alexia, 3-0 to York RI. Straight from the kick off Denva won the ball back and fed Alexia. Good patience work between Alexia and Amber saw Alexia find Denva just inside the box. Her shot was well saved by the Kirk Deighton goalkeeper but the alert Amber smashed the ball into the back of the net, 5-0 to York RI. Great goal for Amber who was the parents’ man on the match, again she covered every blade of grass!
Final Score: York Railway Institute U13s 5 – Kirk Deighton Rangers U13s 0
Coach Chris was delighted with the performance, he said ‘Wow, what can you say about that! We knew how Kirk Deighton would play, they would get behind the ball and frustrate us. But we kept possession really well and were patient, not scared to pass the ball back to move forward.’
‘We were really pleased for Chloe J today. She has been out for a couple of weeks and we weren’t sure how her knee would do, but she was brilliant, never gave up, ran all game, simple passing and two wonderful strikes. When she is in this mood she is one of the very best players in her age group!’
In a final word he said about the whole team, ‘First, a huge thank you to all the parents for all their support throughout the season, they bring their girls to training and matches in all weathers and without them we have no team. We played our first league game on 12th September 2015, so it’s been a long, hard season and to go through with 18 wins out of 18 matches is stunning. All the girls have worked so hard in training and when we have asked them to show their desire and attitude, they have responded brilliantly. They are a fantastic group to coach and Suzy and I take it as a great privilege they want us to be their coaches.’
