Match Report

After nearly a month of no matches due to the indifferent weather, York Railway Institute U13 Girls got their league campaign back on track. They hosted Copmanthorpe U13s at home, a side who always give 100% and are always a good test for the girls.

Kimberly started her first game of the season, slotting into midfield next to Denva, with Grace and Lauren starting at the back, and Alexia and Chloe J upfront. Subs were Amber and Chloe H.

York RI couldn’t have started any better with a goal after only 5.8 seconds. Alexia intercepted the kick off and ran through the whole team to finish smartly past the Copmanthorpe goalkeeper. They were two up after 3 minutes when a great passing move started by Lauren on the halfway line, involving Denva and Alexia, finished smartly with her left foot by Alexia.

Chloe J was causing problems for the Copmanthorpe defence down the right, and she put a couple of great crosses into the box that York RI just couldn’t finish.

After 8 minutes Alexia had to leave the field and York lost their way, in a game they had been totally dominating. Amber replaced Alexia, and after 13 minutes to try and get their shape back, Chloe H replaced Kimberly, moving Lauren into midfield and Chloe H playing at the back. The sticky surface and long grass were not helping York RI as their passing game was not its usual slick self and Copmanthorpe’s physicality was upsetting the York RI players.

Copmanthorpe finished the first half just on top and forced a couple of corners which Katie in the York RI goal dealt with easily. Grace was defending well, but her usual passing out of defence was a little awry.

Half Time 2-0, and York RI not playing their best.

The weather was getting colder all the time and the cold wind really picked up in the second half, but at least the rain stayed away.

Coach Chris Collins asked the girls to concentrate on making sure their passes got to the intended person and not to panic when put under pressure by the opposition. Kimberly replaced Grace at half time and went and played up front.

The second half started with York RI passing the ball a lot better and causing the opposition more problems. After 28 minutes a great passing move involving Denva and Lauren saw Kimberly power a shot that was brilliantly saved by the Copmanthorpe goalkeeper. But from the resultant corner, Denva side footed York 3-0 ahead with a first time finish.

York RI now stepped up a gear and started to dominate the game, with chances for Chloe J, Amber and Denva all coming in quick succession. With 12 minutes to go, Alexia replaced Chloe J and Grace replaced Kimberly, who is still getting her fitness back.

On 40 minutes another good passing move involving half the team saw Alexia rattle the crossbar from close range. She shot just over a minute later as York went in search of their fourth. On 41 minutes Denva swapped passes with Amber down the right and then crossed into the area, but the ball deceived everyone and rolled into the far corner, 4-0 to York RI.

Late on York created chances for Alexia but for once her finishing was slightly off, and the Copmanthorpe man of the match, their goalkeeper, was playing superb.

Final score – York Railway Institute 4 Copmanthorpe 0

After a hard-fought match, York RI had continued their unbeaten start to the season. Coach Chris Collins afterwards said ‘We haven’t played for a month so we were always going to be rusty and our passing showed that today. The pitch and the weather didn’t help, so overall I am pleased, especially by the attitude shown today.’

Final score – York Railway Institute 4 Copmanthorpe 0
