Match Report

York Railway Institute Girls U13’s traveled to Rawcliffe today for a top of the table clash. Rawcliffe are one of the biggest sides in the league which presents a different challenge for the smaller York RI side. Both teams started the day unbeaten in the league, and the match turned out to be full of incidents.

After only 3 minutes Rawcliffe scored when Katie couldn’t hold on to a shoot from the home side. Matters got worse for York RI when, after 10 minutes, captain Denva fell awkward, trapping her ankle under her body, and took no further part in the game. Substitute Kimberly came on for her first game of the season after a long-term knee injury.

Lauren and Chloe H kept Rawcliffe out as the home side looked to dominate the opening half. Both at times made timely interceptions and Chloe H showed her tackling prowess.

York RI struggled to get any passing going and it was only a lucky deflection off Alexia from a corner that brought the away side level after 23 minutes.

Alexia and Chloe J both had to come off during the first half so at times York RI played with only 5 players, so a first half to forget for various reasons!

Half time 1-1, and coach Chris Collins told his team to relax and the goals would come. He assured them there was plenty of time left to win the game and it was all about character in the second half.

What a team talk! Within 3 minutes of the restart York RI were 3-1 ahead with both goals coming from Alexia, the first following a lovely through ball from Chloe J. After that York RI took control of the game and started to create numerous chances. Chloe J and Alexia saw the goalkeeper make some great saves as York RI piled on the pressure.

In the 20th minute of the second half, a corner from the left was missed by everyone and Kimberly at the far post stabbed it back towards goal and Amber smashed the ball passed the stranded Rawcliffe keeper for her first goal of the season.

The final five minutes were the Chloe J show. First she picked the ball up in her own half, before running round three defenders and placing the ball into the far corner. But if the crowd thought that was good, a minute later from just inside the Rawcliffe half, with a first time shoot she rocketed the ball over the Rawcliffe goalkeeper into the roof of the net. Possible goal of the season, one to remember!

Final score – Rawcliffe 1 York Railway Institute 6
