Match Report

After the last two weeks of uncertainty it was great to actually be playing football. Kirk Deighton Rangers are a new side into the league this year and couldn’t have asked for a harder first match.

We asked the girls to concentrate on three things during the game. First: can we keep possession and not rush or give the ball away, second: can we be clinical when in front of goal and finally can we play as a team.  The team played fantastic in the first half with Alexia and Chloe J scoring and most impressively creating plenty of chances for other players. Denva also got a couple and with a bit of luck could have had her hat trick by half time. We rotated the players every 12 minutes so everyone only had a short time in the terrible weather standing on the touch-line. Half time the girls were 13-0 up and could easily have been 20-0, such was their dominance.

Second half we asked Alexia and Chloe J to drop into defence and we gave the girls the new challenge of seeing how many different goal scorers they could get. Lauren, Chloe H and Grace all had turns up front, but only Grace, with a brilliant solo goal managed to add to the goal scorers list. Denva and Amber covered every blade of grass and we are sure the goals for Amber will be plenty this season. A great captain’s performance from Denva, she was very vocal throughout and superb with her passing and supporting from midfield. All the defenders, Lauren, Grace and Chloe H looked very confident and didn’t let anything passed them all day. We need them to have the confidence to support further forward as and when the chance offers itself, but that will come.

We know this season we are going to have to work very hard to improve but if the attitude and commitment is this standard all season, we will be OK. Overall, the most pleasing part from a coaching perspective was the way the girls passed the ball and kept possession. Alexia became a one woman defence in the second half and poor Katie only had about 5 touches all game, but still came off smiling. The Kirk Deighton coach was very impressed and told her team that is the standard of play their team needs to aspire to, a great compliment for the girls.
