On Sunday 28 January 2018, Bootham Futsal Club York girls played their first ever competitive futsal match. They were playing against BFC Best Futsal Club, the recent winners of the Manor Futsal Cup.
They played 20 minutes each way with a continuous clock, and the players were allowed to pass back to the goalkeeper, otherwise it was normal futsal rules.
The teams were:
Bootham Futsal Club – Katie, Kimberly, Niamh, Lily, Drew, Tegan, Chloe, Freya.
BFC Best Futsal Club – Abbi, Dan, Aiden, Owen, Ruby, Izac, Matilde.
The girls of Bootham started brilliantly with a goal after only 2 minutes when Kimberly intercepted a pass and Chloe ran through to finish smartly inside the D. Good passing and movement resulted in a fierce long-range shot from Tegan being saved by Abbi. On 6 minutes BFC were level, Kimberly and Chloe failed to clear the ball and Dan squeezed it passed Katie.
Bootham continued to make chances with Lily and then Niamh forcing Abbi into some smart saves. Lily had a great chance to restore Bootham’s lead but her shot went just wide of the near post. Freya was making some great runs forward for Bootham, but just couldn’t turn any of them into goals. The game was even coming up to half time with Bootham continuing to make the better chances, but Abbi was determined to keep everything out.
Half-time: Bootham Futsal Club 1 – 1 BFC Best Futsal Club
The game turned on its head within the first 5 minutes of the second half. First, Aiden turned in a far post cross from Dan when Kimberly misjudged a clearance. Then Aiden returned the favour to Dan to finish at the far post, and 2 minutes later the same pair repeated the feat, leaving the score 4-1 to BFC. Bootham continued to come forward with some great passing, but just couldn’t get the ball past Abbi in the BFC goal. She twice denied Niamh in a matter of seconds with two close range saves. When Bootham did manage to get the ball past Abbi, the post came to BFC rescue, when Tegan thundered a shot against the foot of the post.
The game was end to end now as both sides started to tire and Katie made a great save when she stopped a 1v1 with Dan. Niamh again went close at the other end when her shot went agonisingly past the far post. With 2 minutes to go, Dan ran through and slotted the ball past Kate to score his fourth, and BFCs fifth. In the dying moments Drew made a fantastic goal line clearance when it looked odds on the ball was going in.
Full-time: Bootham Futsal Club 1 – 5 BFC Best Futsal Club
Girl Of The Game – Lily – She ran all game, covering pretty much ever single part of the court. On another day she would have scored a couple of goals, but it was her intelligent running that caused BFC problems all game. Great start Lily, here’s to the next game.
In conversation afterwards Coach Chris was full of praise for his side. He said, ‘Some of these girls have only been playing futsal for 8 weeks, so to play like they did was brilliant to watch. I know we had twice as many shots on goal as they did, it’s just Abbi was in fantastic form, she made all the difference today. On another day we would have scored 4 or 5 easily.’
He went on to say, ‘Some of the BFC players have been playing futsal for a couple of years now and they are organised and a fantastic team, worthy winners of the Manor Futsal Cup. It was a real challenge for the girls playing them, and I know they have learnt some good lessons. I am so proud of how they played and the future looks very bright for Bootham Futsal Club.”
He finished by saying ‘A huge thank you to the parents who came to support. We know futsal is a new game to a lot of people, but with their support the game will grow. Suzy and I have big plans for this club and without the players and families we are nothing, we are truly humbled by your ongoing support.’
